Blag / Brian Said
Week 15 - 26th May 2005
By Majere

Hot as hell in the old town tonight, and with the revision season a-looming, the signs for a poor turnout are writ large on the horizon. But it seems that BOTB crowds are merely a late-germinating breed this season, for a healthy crop has sprouted in time for the appearance of...
BLAG - Energetic Ska-punkers Blag made a big impression on judges and fans alike with their first round performance, and the healthy crowd that greets them, complete with banner, suggests that enthusiasm has not dimmed. As far as their performance goes, Blag keep up their high standard, the frontman once again babbling at near-lightspeed in a hugely entertaining manner. New track 'Would you sleep with your mum to keep her alive?'goes down well and maintains Blag's reputation for song names that are madder than a march hare on recreational pharmaceuticals. It seems at first that the 50/50 rule has put paid to Blag's other signature- their reworking of the theme from 'Arthur'- but fan power soon changes all that and the track becomes a triumphant finale complete with singalong. Of course, maybe they were going to play it anyway....
Today's top tip- drunkards do not react well to being spun round in circles at high speed. Remember kids, all that gooey stuff is meant to stay on the inside.....
Brian Said are definitely the band with it all to do tonight. Having played their hearts out to little reaction in Round 1, it's difficult to see what the far-roving three-piece can do to improve matters. Brian Said's answer is to do it all again, but louder, better, and with a bombardment of free sweeties! A smallish crowd soon swells as the sheer intensity of the band becomes apparent, as does their generosity with high-calorie incentives, and Brian Said visibly thrive on the attention, jumping into the front row whilst still playing and keeping up a stream of banter with the front row and each other. The frontman's guitar string is once again a casualty ("What is it with me, Yarmouth and guitar strings?' he laments), and is once again shown no mercy whatsoever. Hands down, Brian Said are the most improved band on the night, at least in terms of the fan reaction. Tonight's performance ends, not with the destruction of the drumkit but with the envelopment of bassist Paul in the depths of the pit- and indeed, it seems this is the night when Yarmouth finally embraces the band.
